Rereading the great styles that characterized post-war Italian history all the way up to today and the evolving role of women in society while, at the same time, highlighting the exceptional artisanal and artistic legacy of Italian leather goods: this is the ambitious project successfully undertaken by the show “Inside out. The social life of bags”, which was held at Palazzo Morando in Milan from 13 to 14 February 2017.

Promoted by Aimpes during the 111th edition of Mipel as part of the project ‘Mipel in the city’, with the support of the Ministry of Economic Development – ITA (Italian Trade Agency) and the sponsorship of the city of Milan, the exhibition was staged by Fabiana Giacomotti, writer and professor of the Languages of Fashion at the “La Sapienza” University in Rome. The protagonists were 42 iconic bags from different special periods throughout Italian history, along with books and objects faithfully portraying these eras, which depicted the special relationship between women and this essential and striking fashion accessory: from precious crocodile handbags with silver lipstick cases engraved with the women of Gadda’s books, to the satchels of workers that were hung on bicycles during the years of reconstruction. From the leather and suede shoulder bags and messenger bags of the Seventies to the backpacks in technical fabrics from the Eighties - the cases of the ever-present Walkman - all the way up to shoppers and today’s double bags that can be disassembled and transformed to suit individual needs, with special compartments for electronic devices and ultra-thin cell phones.
The exhibition now sets its sights on going abroad, with the aim of introducing to the international audience the expertise and creativity of leading Italian designer labels and small handcrafted leather goods artisans.
